Libraries of the Department of humanities

MAIN REFERENCES

The libraries of the six former Departments or Institutes that from 2012 became part of the Department of Humanities Studies are, like all other library structures of the University of Macerata, part of the University Library System (SBA), which was set up with the aim of providing academic users with a high level of integrated and homogeneous services.

The entire library heritage is catalogued and the bibliographical information is part of the local OPAC and the national SBN catalogue (National Library Service).

Within its new departmental set-up, although it does maintain its disciplinary peculiarity and managerial independence, the new libraries have been organised in two poles: Pole of Palazzo Ugolini/Via Illuminati and Pole of Via Garibaldi/Palazzo De Vico.

PRESENTATION
The Languages and Historical Sciences Library situated in Palazzo Ugolini, was established at the end of 2006, from the fusion of the Libraries of the Department of Languages and Contemporary Literature and the Department of Historical, Artistic, and Documentary Sciences of the territory, integrated by materials, which mostly consisted of periodicals, coming from the former central library of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy. Currently, following Rectoral Decree 444 dated 2 August 2012, the collection is part of the library complex of the Department of Humanities Studies – languages, mediation, history, arts, philosophy. Its precious stock is enriched even further by the presence of many rare documents including a set of 174 books published in the 16th century from the “Marsili-Feliciangeli” fund.
The library, which is accessible all day, is organised with open shelving and is articulated on three floors with a reserved elevator. On each floor users can avail of two computers that are linked up to a network and several access points for portable PCs. In the basement floor users can avail of a card-operated device to reproduce documents. The library also has equipment for printing microfilms and/or microfiches. In a special reserved area it is also possible to listen to a rich collection of CDs and long playing vinyl records.

In 2005, the library received a donation from Prof. Giovanni Sabbatucci of 265 Italian studies volumes that were owned by Prof. Nunzio Sabbatucci and that make up the fund of the same name.
In 2008 the library that belonged to Prof. Filippo Coccia, professor of the History of Contemporary China at “L’Orientale” of Naples was acquired. The book fund consists of 3,100 volumes and several collections of magazines (3,222 folders of periodicals) collected over a period of time between 1960 and 1990, the majority of which in Chinese and pertaining to literary, historical, economic, sociological subjects in general regarding the 1900’s in China.

PRESENTATION
The library was established after the merging of the respective libraries of the Institutes of ancient history and archaeology and currently, following Rectoral Decree 444 dated 2 August 2012, it is part of the library complex of the Department of Humanities Studies – languages, mediation, history, arts, philosophy; since 2001 the Northern Africa Centre has been part of it, the book heritage of which consists of approximately 1370 volumes and a significant archive of photos, letters and drawings that are currently being catalogued, concerning above all, the activity of the Italian mission in Libya.
All the library volumes are catalogued electronically, a reason for which the consultation of its contents – including periodicals – may come about either by connecting up to the OPAC, or consulting the catalogues on paper (by author and title and by subject) in the library.
As far as the ancient history section is concerned, the following disciplinary areas can be identified: Roman history, Greek history, history of ancient religions, Latin epigraphy; within it there is also a library fund dedicated to Prof. Marcello Zambelli, who donated it to the ancient history institute at the time. Within the framework of the archaeology section: archaeology and Greek and Roman art history, Christian archaeology, Etruscology and Italian antiquities, pre-historical archaeology, numismatics and topography; in common between the two sections there is the historical-archaeological sector of the Marche.
Furthermore, this patrimony of books constitutes an essential form of scientific support for specialised users given also the significant quantity of sector specific periodicals, which are often consulted and requested by other research centres given their peculiarity and consistency.
The library was recently refurbished with an open shelving access system. The years of the periodicals including those up to 2006 were transferred to Palazzo Menichelli.
